With recent videos of Tesla semis outperforming diesel trucks going viral, it’s time to see if the numbers back the hype.
As part of the North American Council for Freight Efficiency’s Run on Less program, users can track stats for participating depots and trucks. The program runs for 18 days and began on September 11. PepsiCo has three Tesla semis driving in the program.
When Tesla’s electric semis were debuted, CEO Elon Musk has bragged that they could complete a 500 mile, 82,000 lb. delivery on one charge. So how are they comparing to that stat? In the first 11 days of the program, the three PepsiCo Teslas have averaged 472 miles/day and 2 deliveries/day.

Tesla 1: 4,331 miles in 11 days, Average 394 miles/day, Average ~2 deliveries/day
Tesla 2: 5,393 miles in 11 days, Average 490 miles/day, Average ~2 deliveries/day
Tesla 3: 5,840 miles in 11 days, Average 531 miles/day, Average ~2 deliveries/day
The semi shown above recorded an impressive 634 miles on September 21.
As impressive as these numbers may be, it is also worth noting that the weights of the hauls have not been reported. Also, the Tesla trucks didn’t face any challenging weather conditions, so it is unclear how that may have affected their performances.
