Trucker Saves Driver from Fiery Wreck
In a remarkable act of bravery, William Mitchell, a professional truck driver from Alto, Georgia, has been recognized as a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) for his courageous actions during a fiery accident. Mitchell, who drives for Penske Logistics, demonstrated exceptional heroism when he rescued an unconscious driver trapped beneath a burning vehicle.
The incident occurred on October 16 in Jefferson, Georgia. Mitchell was waiting at a red light on a divided highway when he witnessed a catastrophic collision between a pickup truck and a tanker truck. The impact resulted in an immediate explosion, engulfing the vehicles in flames. Recalling the scene, Mitchell said, “I guess he hit him right in the fuel tank. It was an instant fireball. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a car accident that had an explosion like that other than in a movie.”
Without hesitation, Mitchell parked his truck and rushed to the scene. He discovered the pickup truck driver had been ejected and was trapped under the vehicle, unconscious and on fire. Mitchell sprinted back to his truck to retrieve a fire extinguisher and returned to douse the flames consuming the driver. With the assistance of two other bystanders, he managed to pull the injured man a safe distance away from the burning wreckage.
Despite their efforts, the fire near the tanker truck was too intense to control. Mitchell noted, “It was just everywhere; there was just no point in trying that.” Fortunately, the tanker had rolled over during the crash, and its driver managed to crawl out of the cab and escape unharmed. The injured pickup truck driver was later reported to be in stable condition.
Reflecting on his actions, Mitchell expressed humility, stating, “I’m a very compassionate person, I guess. I’m always in the mindset of ‘what would I want somebody to do for me?’ I surely would want somebody to save me and not leave me there.”
The TCA’s Highway Angel program honors truck drivers who exhibit extraordinary kindness, courage, and courtesy on the road. Mitchell’s selfless actions exemplify the spirit of this recognition, highlighting the critical role truck drivers play not only in transportation but also in safeguarding the communities they serve.
