1,500 gallons of crude oil covered the highway near Salt Lake City Wednesday night after an accident involving an oil tanker. Dashcam recorded by another driver shows the unfortunate event unfold.
Trucker Jesse Kelley submitted his dashcam footage to KUTV. In the video, an oil tanker speeds up on the right and attempts to pass the drivers in Kelley’s lane. However, before it can merge back over, it rams into the back of a disabled truck on the side of the road. The impact sends debris and oil all over the highway. Luckily, Kelley was able to react quick enough to not be involved in the accident.
“The only two options I have are slam on my brakes or go hard left and thank god nobody was there,” he told KUTV in their report. “It’s just slowing down and just looking at the car in front of you,” said Kelley. “What if? What if this happens? Where’s my way out? What’s my exit?”
According to KUTV, I-15 was closed all night and into the early morning as hazmat crews cleaned up 1,500 gallons of oil. Utah’s DOT reported that 6 vehicles lost control on the slippery highway, but no injuries were reported.
