2.5 Million Sign Petition supporting undocumented Trucker
In August, a deadly accident on Florida’s Turnpike killed three people. Tragedy struck when an undocumented truck driver made an illegal U-turn into traffic. A minivan driving towards the the semi could not stop in time and collided with the trailer, killing all occupants. Two instantly at the scene and one passed away later at the hospital. The driver, Harjinder Singh, was uninjured and faces three counts of vehicular homicide, up to 45 years in prison, possible deportation. Authorities revealed he entered the U.S. illegally in 2018 and secured a CDL in California despite his status.
According to NewsNation, Singh was denied bond by a judge late last week and is currently under ICE custody in Florida.
The accident has sparked debate online among truckers and all drivers on how the justice system should handle things. Some sympathize, stressing that one mistake shouldn’t define someone’s career or life. Others are outraged, arguing no sympathy is owed when licensing laws were bypassed in the first place.
In the weeks since the crash, a social media petition has gathered over 2.5 million signatures, with supporters calling on authorities to show Singh mercy. The petition suggests leniency, community service, and counseling to Singh instead of more severe punishments.
“No deal. In Florida, criminal actions have consequences,” Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ office told NewsNation.
