WATCH: Why Trailers Need Side Markers

A terrifying crash video making the rounds online is a pretty good example of how quickly things can go wrong when a trailer is difficult to see in the dark.

The video, posted to r/Truckers by u/muck2profit shows exactly “why you need side markers” The dashcam video shows a POV driving down a dark two-lane road. Up ahead, a semi appears to be approaching in the opposite lane of traffic. At first, the truck’s headlights are easy to see. The problem is everything behind them. As the dashcam vehicle approaches, the semi’s headlights create a bright glare while the side of its trailer remains extremely difficult to make out. For several seconds, it’s nearly impossible to see that the trailer is actually blocking the lane. By the time the trailer becomes clearly visible in the video, there’s no room left to stop. The vehicle slams directly into the side of the trailer in a violent collision that brings the video to an abrupt end.
