Is self-driving technology is facing a roadblock? Another autopiloted car has crashed into a stationary vehicle.
According to Yahoo!, a parked semi was struck by a “self-driving” Tesla in Pennsylvania on July 23. Police told reporters that the vehicle was driving using autopilot software when the accident occurred. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
The Tesla was reportedly on autopilot in the middle lane when it hit crashed into a parked Freightliner semi. According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the truck was stopped in the middle lane to help control traffic for the closure of the right lane.
This incident comes after another autopiloted Tesla crashed into a parked fire truck in California this year. That accident killed the Tesla driver, and has caused some skepticism over the autopilot’s safety.
In the past, Tesla has stated that the autopilot can accelerate, brake, and steer, but still needs an alert human to operate the vehicle. The 18-year-old driving the Tesla in Pennsylvania was charged with careless driving for not being alert while the vehicle was on autopilot.
