Cargo Thieves Use New Tactics for Trucks on the Move
According to a recent Intelligence Insider Alert, cargo thieves are using increasingly bold tactics, including plundering cargo from moving trucks. Overhaul reports that these criminals exploit quick stops—like traffic lights —to sneakily enter trailers. Once inside, they swiftly gather high-value, compact items like consumer electronics. Then, the stolen goods are then discreetly transferred to accomplices’ vehicles while both vehicles are in motion, allowing thieves to exit undetected at subsequent stops.
This method has been reported all over United States, from the East to West coasts. The targeted items are typically small in size but high in value, enabling thieves to profit without needing to steal large quantities. In some cases, if an opportunity to exit the trailer doesn’t present itself, the thieves’ accomplice vehicle will maneuver in front of the truck, forcing it to slow down or stop, for a safe exit for the perpetrators.
The rise in such thefts is part of a broader trend. CargoNet, a logistics security firm, reported a 27% increase in cargo theft incidents in 2024 compared to the previous year, with total losses nearing $455 million.
To mitigate these risks, Overhaul advises truckers to be alert to vehicles that may be following them. If a driver suspects they are being tailed, recommended actions include reducing speed by 15 mph below the limit for about 10 minutes, exiting and re-entering the highway to observe if the suspicious vehicle persists, and contacting dispatch or a remote monitoring center before stopping in a well-lit, populated area to notify law enforcement.
As cargo theft tactics evolve, it’s important for truckers to stay informed and implement proactive measures to protect themselves and their cargo. Stay safe out there, drivers!
