Overturned Semi Dumps 100K Salmon in Wrong River

Overturned Semi Dumps 100K Salmon in Wrong River! A fishy fiasco resulted in thousands of salmon spilling in the wrong river in Oregon.

According to a press release from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, a trucker hauling salmon had an accident near La Grande, Oregon. The semi tried to make a sharp turn, and the 53-foot trailer overturned. The truck landed on its passenger side, rolled upside down, and came to a stop.

The big rig was hauling over 100,000 Chinook smolts to release in the Imnaha River to help repopulate it. The accident pierced the tanker carrying the fish, and caused many of the salmon to slide down into Lookingglass Creek. ODFW estimates that about 25,000 fish died in the accident and the other 75,000 made it into the creek.

The press release reported that the driver was not seriously injured, and that this incident shouldn’t impact the overall effort to restock the fish population in the future.
