Tesla Semi Involved in First Fatal Accident

A fatal crash involving a Tesla Semi is under investigation in Nevada after the electric Class 8 truck was involved in a three-vehicle collision that claimed two lives and seriously injured another person.

According to Clean Trucking, the crash happened on June 28 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 50 and Traditions Parkway near Dayton, Nevada. Investigators say the Tesla Semi struck two passenger vehicles that were stopped at a red light. Two occupants of a vintage Volkswagen Beetle were killed, while a third person in another vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries. The Tesla Semi driver was not injured.

Authorities say the crash remains under investigation. Preliminary statements from investigators indicate the truck driver may have fallen asleep before the collision, but no final determination has been made and officials have not released additional information about whether any of the truck’s onboard safety systems played a role.

The crash is believed to be the first known fatal crash involving a Tesla Semi since the electric truck entered production. The incident has drawn attention because Tesla has promoted the Semi’s advanced safety features, although investigators have not suggested that the technology caused or prevented the crash.

Tesla’s electric truck has been a frequent topic here at Mighty Trucker over the past few years. We’ve covered everything from production delays and real-world performance testing to its climb over Donner Pass and the challenges firefighters faced after a Tesla Semi battery fire required tens of thousands of gallons of water to extinguish. This latest story marks a much more serious milestone as investigators work to determine exactly what happened.

For now, there are still more questions than answers. Investigators continue to examine the crash, and no conclusions have been reached regarding fault beyond the preliminary information released at the scene.

Our thoughts are with the families of the victims.
