Trucker Poll: Do You Support the English Language Mandate for CDL Drivers?

Trucker Poll: Do You Support the English Language Mandate for CDL Drivers?

The White House dropped an Executive Order that’s making waves in the trucking world— and now we want to hear from you.

In April, President Donald Trump signed a directive aimed at enforcing English proficiency for all commercial drivers operating in the U.S. The move is being pitched as a roadway safety issue, with the administration arguing that all drivers should be able to read traffic signs, speak to law enforcement, and understand instructions in English.

The new order calls for several key changes:

  • Reinstating strict enforcement of English-language rules for CDL holders

  • Mandating out-of-service orders for drivers who don’t meet language standards

  • Reviewing how non-domiciled licenses are issued across states

  • Launching additional safety and regulatory actions to support working U.S. truckers

“English is a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers,” the order states, arguing that enforcement of this rule has been too lax since previous federal guidance rolled it back.

Supporters say this is common sense—after all, truckers need to be able to understand road signs and communicate at weigh stations, border checks, and with DOT officers. But others feel this could unfairly target immigrant drivers, many of whom are safe, experienced, and already contributing to the industry.

Truckers have strong opinions on both sides. That’s why we’re asking:

What do you think?

Should English proficiency be strictly enforced as a CDL requirement?
