Watch This Trucker Leave the Wheel While Driving

We’ve seen plenty of questionable decisions behind the wheel, but this one might take the cake…

A video recently posted on r/Truckers shows a truck driver getting completely out of the driver’s seat while his semi rolls down the highway. The post quickly took off on the subreddit, attracting more than 1,000 upvotes and plenty of reactions from other drivers.

The footage is from a driver-facing cam and shows the semi trucking on down the highway, until the driver gets up. He moves back toward the sleeper area of the truck, while steadying the wheel with one hand. Things start to go awry when he takes his eyes off the road and starts reaching for something behind the passenger seat. With his focus drifting away, the semi soon follows. By the time the trucker snaps back to attention and grabs the wheel, it’s too late. He frantically grabs the wheel and, from the looks of it, he sends the semi offroad.

It’s unknown what happens after the video cuts off. The incident reportedly happened in Veracruz, Mexico back in June.

As you might expect, drivers in the comments had plenty to say about the video. One of the biggest questions was simple: “What is worth your life to grab”? Other truckers used the video as a reminder to keep anything you might need during a trip within reach or simply pull over if you need something from another part of the cab. One said, “During my pre-trip, I’ve learned to get all my snacks ready and set up for easy access. If I drop something, I’m pulling to the side.”

Another commenter admitted to having tried something similar before realizing how dangerous it was, adding that they now keep everything they need close enough to reach from the driver’s seat.

We don’t know what the driver was reaching for or what happened after the truck left the roadway. What we can guarantee is that nothing sitting in the sleeper is worth letting a moving semi “drive itself” into harms way. Next time you’re thinking of grabbing something just out of reach, remember this video and don’t make the same mistake.

Stay alert and drive safe out there, truckers!
