Walmart Launches First Electric Semi
Walmart has made history by becoming the first major retailer in Canada to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck. According to Walmart Canada, their goal is to eventually have 100% of their fleet be powered by alternative fuel. By incorporating this new high-tech truck, Walmart Canada aims to reduce its carbon footprint by eliminating an estimated 97 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.
Walmart’s new semi is a Nikola Hydrogen Fuel Cell EV Class 8 tractor. It drives with no tailpipe emissions, but only has a range of approximately 500 miles. For comparison, an average diesel powered semi typically drives about 2,000 miles on a full tank.

Nikola is an American manufacturer of heavy-duty commercial battery-electric vehicles and fuel-cell electric vehicles. However, they’ve had some issues in the past with trucks catching fire and having to be recalled. The fires originated in the battery pack, which were reported to generate heat of over 800 degrees.
Walmart Canada’s adoption of the hydrogen fuel cell electric semi-truck is part of its ongoing efforts to lead the retail industry towards a more sustainable future. This move is expected to either pave the way for other retailers to invest in eco-friendly transportation alternatives, or could deter other companies from using electric trucks. All will depend on the trucks performance, and if they can handle the hauls.
