Train Collides with Sleepy Eye Semi!

A collision between a semi-truck and a train occurred on Friday, April 4. The incident took place on U.S. Highway 14 in in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota.

According to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, a 24-year-old trucker was driving west on Highway 14. When he attempted to turn right over the train tracks, the semi was struck by an oncoming Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad train.

The impact was severe, splitting the trailer in half and scattering the grain it was hauling. The two train operators, aged 56 and 57 from Madison Lake, Minnesota, sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. Both the semi-truck and the train sustained significant damage, with the grain trailer being declared a total loss.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Office offered the following railroad crossing tips for all drivers:

• Slow down when approaching a railroad crossing.
• Stop and listen at the railroad crossing.
• Stay back when necessary
• Have patience.
• LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING.
• Do not stop on the train tracks.
• Never drive under or around the gates or past the lights (if flashing).
• Wait until the gates are completely raised and the lights have stopped flashing before crossing.
