This is why you always, always, always stop before railroad tracks.
A terrifying close call in Florida is getting a lot of attention after video showed a train clipping the back of a school bus packed with students at a railroad crossing.
According to Click Orlando, the incident happened in Sumter County when a school bus carrying 29 children and two adults crossed the tracks just as a train was approaching. The train ended up striking the rear corner of the bus, missing a potentially catastrophic outcome by what officials described as only inches.
Investigators say the driver, 67-year-old Yvonne Hampton, allegedly ignored the crossing despite the approaching train. According to the arrest report, she could reportedly be heard saying she was “not gonna stop for no train” before crossing. Hampton has since been fired and charged with 29 counts of felony child neglect, along with failing to stop at a railroad crossing.

The scary part is the video from inside the bus. As the train flies past, kids can be heard screaming in panic while the train clips the back end of the vehicle. Amazingly, nobody on the bus was injured.

School officials said the situation could have turned deadly if the bus had been only a few inches farther back on the tracks. The district also praised the train conductor for reacting quickly and sounding the horn as the train approached.
For truckers and anyone driving larger vehicles, it’s another reminder that railroad crossings are never something to gamble with. Obviously, truckers aren’t hauling cargo as precious as children’s lives, but let this still be a reminder that it’s better to be safe than sorry!
