With Easter right around the corner, it seems that truckers hauling chocolate better keep a close eye on their trailers.
A semi hauling 12 tons of KitKat bars was stolen, with both the truck and the entire load vanishing without a trace. According to Fox Business, the shipment left a facility in Italy and was headed for Poland, but it never made it.
The trailer was carrying a total of about 413,000 KitKat bars. The timing of this heist couldn’t have been worse, with the load disappeared right before Easter… one of the busiest times of year for chocolate sales. Reports estimate the value of the stolen freight at around $400,000. Thankfully, Nestle reports that the theft shouldn’t affect supply enough to cause a shortage before Easter.
What makes this case even stranger is how little is known about where the truck went. Authorities are still trying to piece together exactly how the theft happened, and the entire rig is still unaccounted for. Nestlé, the company behind KitKat, said the stolen bars could potentially show up through unofficial or black-market channels, but each product carries a batch code, meaning there’s still a chance the shipment could be identified if it resurfaces.
“We’ve always encouraged people to have a break with KitKat– but it seems thieves have taken the message too literally and made a break with more than 12 tonnes of our chocolate . . . Whilst we appreciate the criminals’ exceptional taste, the fact remains that cargo theft is an escalating issue for businesses of all sizes,” said a KitKat spokesperson.
